SAWC integrates Foundations of Problem Solving in their curriculum

The Southern African Wildlife College (SAWC), a premier institution for conservation training in the region, has added the Foundations of Problem-Solving e-course—developed by LEAD Conservation—to its growing suite of extra-curricular offerings for learners. The course introduces a structured approach to tackling complex conservation challenges and is fast becoming an essential learning pathway for aspiring protected area professionals.

A cornerstone of this course is the contribution of Dr. Andrew Lemieux, a senior researcher in wildlife crime prevention and a key member of LEAD Conservation. Dr. Lemieux is internationally recognised for his work on problem-oriented approaches to wildlife protection and is the co-author of the influential guide Problem Analysis for Wildlife Protection in 55 Steps. His work has fundamentally reshaped how conservation practitioners understand and address the underlying causes of wildlife crime.

As part of the LEAD team, Andrew has played a central role in embedding analytical thinking and crime prevention science into the Foundations of Problem-Solving course. His contribution helps learners move beyond reactive tactics and toward proactive, evidence-based solutions that target the root causes of threats to protected areas.

By offering the course as an extra-curricular option, SAWC enables its students to enhance their critical thinking skills and leadership potential alongside their core studies. According to SAWC Programme Manager Amanda Mathe, this reflects the College’s ongoing commitment to producing not just field-ready graduates, but strategic thinkers.

LEAD Conservation’s Foundations of Problem-Solving course is already being used to train rangers, analysts, and park managers across Africa. Its structure draws from decades of fieldwork and doctrine, combining lessons from conservation science, policing, and military strategy—all adapted to the realities of African protected areas.

With the support of the Southern African Wildlife College and the expertise of leading practitioners like Dr. Andrew Lemieux, the next generation of conservation professionals will be equipped not only to protect, but to transform.

The course is now available to selected SAWC learners through the College’s extra-curricular development pathway.
